Cannabis effects on driving behavior in medical cannabis patients
Principal Investigator: Dr. Tammy Chung (contact PI)
Project Number: R21 DA054614
Funding Agency: National Institute on Drug Abuse
This exploratory study combines smartphone monitoring of driving behavior with daily data collection to examine effects of cannabis on driving behavior in real-world conditions among medical cannabis patients. Study results have important public health implications for guiding efforts to prevent driving under the influence of cannabis.
Smartphone sensor data to detect shifts in healthy behaviors among young adult hazardous drinkers
Principal Investigator: Dr. Tammy Chung
Project Number: R21 AA030153
Funding Agency: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
This secondary data analysis will use phone sensor data (e.g., activity level, travel pattern, communication pattern from call logs) in the context of an alcohol clinical trial to gain new insight into when and how young adults’ routines change in response to alcohol intervention. Results will inform personalized interventions based on phone sensor data (e.g., GPS, accelerometer) to optimize digital intervention effects.
Ethics of HIV-related research involving underage key populations in sub-Saharan Africa
Principal Investigator: Dr. Ashley Grosso
Project Number: R01 HD105684
Funding Agency: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
This study will involve a systematic review of where and how underage key populations have been included in HIV research in Africa, surveillance of African countries’ policies on parental consent for minors’ participation in research, and surveys and focus groups of research ethics committee members in Africa and HIV researchers who have conducted studies with key populations in Africa that included or excluded minors.

Role of sleep in cardiovascular health among men living with HIV
Principal Investigator: Dr. Brett Millar
Project Number: R01 HL156788
Funding Agency: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
This observational study will measure sleep, HIV health, inflammation, and cardiovascular health across a 12-month period among sexual minority men living with HIV, who are aged 45-64.
Piloting an app-based JIT adaptive ecological momentary intervention to reduce substance use among HIV positive sexual minority men
Principal Investigator: Dr. Marie Sizemore and Dr. Brett Millar
Project Number: R34 DA053999
Funding Agency: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Positive affect and mindfulness, as stress buffering mechanisms, have shown promise for improving substance use and other HIV-related health outcomes among individuals living with HIV (LWH) and sexual minority men (SMM). We will tailor and optimize our integrative positive affect and mindfulness, app-based intervention for SMM-LWH and comorbid substance use, which will have a powerful and sustained impact on HIV-related health outcomes for this population.
Virtual gaming tool aimed to reduce physician stigma toward LGBTQ and racial minority patients with substance use disorders

Aging in a foreign land: Social isolation, depression, and cardiovascular health among older Chinese immigrants
Principal Investigator: Dr. Yanping Jiang
Funding Agency: P50 Pilot Project, National Institute of Minority Health Disparities
This project investigates momentary and daily dynamics (i.e., loneliness, salivary cortisol as an objective indicator of stress) linking social isolation with mental health (i.e., depressive symptoms) and cardiovascular risk factors (i.e., high blood pressure) among older Chinese immigrants.
Cultural and environmental influences on precursors to and early stages of alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis use in Black and Latinx youth
Principal Investigator: Dr. Carolyn Sartor
Project Number: R01 MD016922
Funding Agency: National Institute of Minority Health Disparities
Drawing data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, this project investigates cultural and environmental factors such as racial/ethnic discrimination, religious involvement, ethnic identity, and neighborhood deprivation in relation to substance use pathways – from cognitions to regular use – in Black and Latinx youth.
Ecological momentary assessment of racial microaggressions and alcohol use in African American young adults
Principal Investigator: Dr. Carolyn Sartor (MPI)
Project Number: R21 MD017454
Funding Agency: National Institute of Minority Health Disparities
This project implements an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to track race-related microaggression experiences and drinking behaviors in real time among African American adults in the peak period of risk for problem drinking (ages 18-25) to evaluate associations between racial microaggressions and alcohol use in this high-risk group.
